2024 RYSE MPLS SUMMER MEDIA CAMP

Are you interested in getting paid to learn new media production, TV, and storytelling skills? Use your voice to tell local stories that are important to you! If you’re looking for real-world career training, register for RYSE MPLS Summer Media Camp today.

RYSE MPLS (Representing Youth Stories and Experiences in Minneapolis) 2024 Summer Media Camp is a free 2-week program for high school students interested in media production, TV, and storytelling in July and August. RYSE provides teens with an immersive creative and career development opportunity and the tools to develop short stories they are passionate about. Participants will collaborate with their peers, local media professionals and community partners to bring an impactful story to life, ready for the big screen and TV!

RYSE MPLS Story Lab is offered across two cohorts. Choose one of the following:  

  • JULY COHORT: July 8th - July 19th (Cohort Full - Waitlist)
    Monday - Friday daily from 11AM - 4PM
    + Screening event on Tuesday July 23rd from 5PM - 7PM

  • AUGUST COHORT: August 12th - August 23rd (Cohort Full - Waitlist)
    Monday - Friday daily from 11AM - 4PM
    + Screening event on Tuesday August 27th from 5PM - 7PM

There are 16 total spots available across both Cohorts (8 participants per Cohort)

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • $300 stipends and daily lunch/snacks
  • Media career training in production, impactful storytelling, 4K cameras, audio, lighting, video editing and more
  • Resume-building opportunities with media professionals and a finished product to use in your portfolio
  • SPEAK MPLS annual Storyteller membership (a $200 value) to advance your journey in media with access to production studios, media labs equipment and discounted classes

RYSE MPLS Story Lab was created for teens interested in working with a creative cohort of peers to develop impactful stories that explore local issues that matter to youth. Participants will develop strong leadership and organizational skills, and experience how teen voices can create change in our communities. Participants must attend all Monday - Friday sessions and the final screening event.

  • Week 1 will include video production training, hands-on workshops, field trips, and community partner interviews where experienced media professionals and mentors guide participants in becoming experts in telling stories they are passionate about.
  • Week 2 will include video editing training, additional field trips to interviewing locations for capturing B-roll, and editing stories to be ready for the screening event the following week.
  • RYSE MPLS Story Lab will culminate in a special community screening event on the Tuesday following each Cohort. The series will also be featured on SPEAK MPLS TV’s family of channels on Comcast Xfinity in Minneapolis.

FAQ

Tell me more about the program!
  • RYSE MPLS programming will be held at SPEAK MPLS South located at 2429 Nicollet Avenue, Monday - Friday from 11AM - 4PM
  • As an immersive, daily program, all participants are required to attend all program days and the final screening event on the final Friday of the program. Exceptions must be approved in advance.
  • All participants will receive a $300 stipend at the end of the program (based on program attendance)
  • Daily lunch and snacks will be provided
  • Participants needing bus cards will be provided Metro Transit passes upon request

Who is encouraged to apply to the RYSE MPLS Summer Media Camp?

We recognize that youth have unique identities and experiences not always represented in media. While RYSE MPLS welcomes applications from any high schools student, those who identify as the following are encouraged to apply:

  • High school students enrolled in 9th-12th grade at Minneapolis Public Schools for the 2024-2025 academic year (current 8th grade and graduating 12th grade students will be considered)
  • Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch
  • Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) students
  • English language learners
  • Students who identify as LGBTQ+
  • Students with disabilities
  • Students experiencing homelessness
