COMMUNITY MEDIA SPECIALIST

We are seeking a team member with a passion for breaking down barriers to access media tools, education and making our city a better place through storytelling. This is an exciting position for an individual who is an entrepreneurial thinker and has a strong interest in digital equity and engaging with diverse communities. The Community Media Specialist reports to the Studio Manager, and is responsible for supporting team members with operational, program and production functions to make the media center and related programs run smoothly.

STUDIO OPERATIONS - 50%
  • Serve as a point-of-contact for members and the public through answering phones, responding to emails, text communication and general inquiries
  • Assist in the day-to-day activities of the SPEAK MPLS media centers including equipment and studio bookings, buying and tracking inventory, organizing and maintaining sanitized and clean spaces
  • Provide administrative support including scheduling, calendar and website updates, filing and maintaining communication of related tasks and appointments between staff, members and the public
  • PROGRAM ADMIN + PRODUCTION - 50%
  • Responsible for scheduling, recruitment and teaching our core media training series, Content Creator Courses, and assist with after school program
  • Assist with programs, community events, media activations and membership engagement, including leading tours and orientations, and helping facilitate the membership onboarding and media journey
  • Assist in the creation of new class offerings, on-demand video classes and creative content
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with public access TV, community media, youth work and the Minneapolis community
  • Have 2-3 years experience in media with emphasis in film and TV productions with working knowledge of video production and communication tools including studio and DSLR cameras, microphones, lighting equipment, audio boards, video switchers, nonlinear editing and digital media software (Adobe Creative Suite / Final Cut X, iMovie, etc) and Google Suite and Slack
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, creatively solving problems while remaining organized and flexible within a highly collaborative environment
  • HOURS, BENEFITS + COMPENSATION
    This is a full-time, exempt position, with a base salary of $40K plus bonuses and room for growth in the organization. This is a hybrid position, and the ideal candidate will have flexibility to work afternoons, evenings and weekends with a mix of in-studio and virtual hours. FT employees receive a $200 monthly health and wellness stipend, and all employees receive SPEAK MPLS membership to access all studios, equipment, co-working spaces and media center resources.

     

    BROADCAST MANAGER

    We are seeking a team member with a strong background in TV broadcast and programming. This is an exciting position for an individual who has a passion for digital equity, amplifying diverse voices and curating an exciting digital experience for viewers. The ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial approach to work, with the ability to effectively collaborate in a fast-paced media environment with shifting priorities, reacting strategically, dynamically, and accurately. The Broadcast Manager reports directly to the Director, and is responsible for overall operations of SPEAK MPLS TV, and building relationships with content creators, partners and sourcing new content.

    SPEAK MPLS TV OPERATIONS - 50%
  • Oversee transmission distribution system for 3 SPEAK MPLS TV cable channels and related internet stream and digital platforms, and monitor and enforce related content policy and procedures
  • Manage content submissions (member, sponsored and partnership content) community bulletin board, PSAs, etc) publish programming schedules, and maintain media asset management system
  • Keep viewers informed through creating original content, SPEAK MPLS TV channel graphics, bumpers and other informational content as needed
  • Serve as a liaison with IT department and external cable TV engineers, and collaborate with internal management teams to meet goals, and track outcomes through weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting
  • PROGRAM ADMIN + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - 50%
  • Responsible for regular community outreach, sourcing new content, and maintaining a strong pipeline of new members, partnership and sponsorship opportunities
  • Assist with daily operation of 2 facilities, including assisting members with the content submission process and creative ideas, teaching classes, fielding general inquiries and consulting on projects
  • Promote awareness of SPEAK MPLS brand by creating and curating a compelling content experience for viewers on TV and digital platforms
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with public access TV, community media, youth work and the Minneapolis community
  • The ideal candidate will have a four year degree in media, TV/broadcasting, film or communications, OR a minimum of three years of demonstrated success in the field
  • Strong experience in all aspects of studio and field production, including camera operation (studio and DSLR cameras), lighting, audio, media distribution (file types, codecs, compression techniques), and post-production software (Adobe Creative Suite / Final Cut X, iMovie, etc)
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently while collaborating across the SPEAK MPLS team using digital tools including Google Suite and Slack, and with membership, partners and the public.
  • Experience with content creation and education is desired, as teaching media lessons in various multimedia production subjects to community members and staff will be expected.
  • HOURS, BENEFITS + COMPENSATION
    This is a part-time, 25-hour a week exempt position, at $25/hr with room for growth in the company. As a hybrid position, the ideal candidate will have flexibility to work afternoons, evenings and weekends with a mix of in-studio and virtual hours. This position is exempt from benefits, but we offer bonuses, and a membership to SPEAK MPLS membership to access all studios, equipment, co-working spaces and media center resources.
